THE REASON - SINGLE & VIDEO REVIEW

NEVER LET ME DOWN

The newest single & video release from the Reason, portrays an outstanding visual representation of the importance of cherishing our time.

The music has been greatly structured and moulded together to unravel as the story is told throughout the video. Musically, vocally and visually this is a brilliant piece of work.

The video is set in a naturalistic and simple location, which is a perfect fit for the song and video style.

The theme was extremely well thought out and each member did an amazing job of conveying how life is too short to waste any time but to also enjoy living in the moment. The whole idea surrounding perspectives at different ages is the main point which makes you begin to rethink – have we truly fulfilled our time?

I will first highlight that the main lyrics which stood out to me, lie within the chorus. I felt they matched the videos main themes: “I’m too young, never grow old. I’m too young, that’s what I’m told.” Which is also something everyone can relate to on some level, we’ve all been told that we’re ‘too young’ for something and have felt sense of discouragement which may have led us to take a different route to later regret the outcome.

We are introduced within the first scene to the band themselves, getting ready to begin playing – then the opening verse begins, and we can soon put together the sections.

- We have the two younger children setting the scene for the beginning of a life, creativity and adventure and are also portraying the sense of freedom. They are enjoying life as it passes by.

- The band are enjoying playing music in the field just as the children are enjoying playing together in the field – this shows how time changes and Its almost a mirror image of how you progress as a human being but you still go back to your routes or where/whatever makes you most happy.

- The band have set a timeless scene themselves when they are playing their music. They are indulged solely in the music and that’s all that matters at that point. Playing together and creating that emotion of satisfaction with their journey so far.

- The older gentlemen: a representation of how time fly’s. In his scene’s some are portraying he feels he has wasted time. As though he is waiting for something to happen or for someone to come into his life. He has now come to a realisation of how his life has passed by as he looks out the window towards the forest/field and reminisces of when he used to play there as a child.

- There is also a scene where he is sitting alone, and the music is silent – all you can hear is the clock ticking which also signifies how fast time passes by right in front of your eyes. In another scene he washes his face and stairs intensely in the mirror as if trying to figure out what’s went on throughout his life. How did he end up here? Which is concluded with the lyrics; ‘We won’t know, where to go. We don’t know, how to take it slow... and Never grow old’

I feel the video was a major success in conveying their own perspective and following through with the song’s main themes. They have touched upon what it’s like from a child’s perspective, when they have their full life ahead of them and are happy to be adventurous and explore their freedom.

Then switching to the band, their position now - how they remember the past and the hope they have for the future and their next ventures. Whither it be in the sense of career progression, finding love & romance or just living their opportunities to the fullest without situations getting in the way “We won’t know where to go and how to take to take it slow”.

Now switching to the older gentlemen and how he is reminiscing of his past, this gives the idea of how life is short and (as cheesy as it sounds), you should live it to the fullest before you regret wasted time.

The end of the video shows the older gentlemen walking out the door to then meet his younger self standing – as if he gains closure and glimpses in admiration to see the youngster smiling in his innocence and naivety.

This latest piece of work from The Reason is one of their best to date. From the song itself and the video planning, idea creations, location set and those involved in the video such as the three extra characters. This is bringing together the image nicely and puts their message across clearly with an easy to follow yet intriguing story line.

This is a video and song, which as I mentioned before; we can all truly relate to, as at some point in our lives we wish to look back at our younger selves (at a care-free time) when we had no idea what was in store for us. But to also live in the moment and make the most of the time we have, before we gain a sense of resentment for our younger selves for time not spent wisely.
